At the heart of the Ion Endoluminal System is an ultra-thin, human-controlled robotic catheter, designed to navigate the intricate pathways deep within the peripheral lung. What sets the Ion system apart are its unique and powerful capabilities. The flexible robotic catheter is small enough to reach all 18 segments of the lung, navigating the complex path with a thin and flexible vision probe that provides direct visualization throughout the journey. The system also integrates an innovative fiber-optic shape sensor, providing precise location and shape information throughout the navigation and biopsy process. This sensor, unlike other tracking technologies, is not sensitive to metal objects, making it a game-changer in the field.

Another unique feature of the Ion system is the Flexision needle—a flexible biopsy needle that smoothly navigates the twists and turns of the catheter without affecting aim. This needle, combined with the system's 3D planning software, allows physicians to map a detailed virtual plan of their patient’s lung, performing targeting and biopsy with enhanced digital tools.

The Ion system is the result of nearly a decade of development and rigorous research, including formative and summative analysis of proposed designs, engineering validation and verification processes, and clinical trials. The design team also engaged in regular field study where ethnographic data was collected and latent needs analyzed. This meticulous process led to the creation of a product that balances the new with the familiar, providing a product experience that feels considered and helps physicians succeed.
