Hera: A Futuristic Interpretation of J-Class Sailing Yachts

Celebrating Speed and Innovation

Hera is a concept sailing yacht inspired by J-Class vessels, the single-masted racing sailboats built in the 1930s to compete in the America’s Cup. This futuristic interpretation celebrates these peak racers through innovative materials and shapes.

The innovative deck design of Hera is the biggest visual innovation. Its volume celebrates wind and speed as it flows over the hull, from the bow to the steer. The narrow tip seamlessly merges into the bow of the yacht and gradually grows wider towards the steer, where it wraps around the hull, creating its unique integrated rudders. This design not only enhances the yacht's performance but also adds a touch of elegance.

The hull design of Hera is inspired by automotive design, with meticulously controlled highlights running along its sides. This controlled surfacing creates a sleek and dynamic appearance. The intersection of the deck and hull volumes seamlessly creates the opening for daylight and integrates the support for the steering wheels, adding to the yacht's functionality.

Hera is constructed using a new generation of hull design and lightweight carbon composite construction. This advanced technology provides reduced displacement and increased rigidity, resulting in exceptional performance. With a length overall of 48 meters, a maximum beam of 8.5 meters, and a draught of 7 meters, Hera is designed to surf at speeds exceeding 25 knots downwind. The sail area of 920 square meters ensures optimal sailing performance.

The advanced sail handling system of Hera delivers easy control, allowing for reduced racing crew. This ensures that the yacht can be operated efficiently and effectively during races. The project was privately realized between February and May 2019 in Shanghai and Munich by Nicola Mondini, who aimed to integrate future technologies and materials while paying homage to the tradition of J-Class yachts.

Hera's design has been recognized for its excellence and creativity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Yacht and Marine Vessels Design category in 2020. This prestigious award honors designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
