Light - Discovering Umbria

A Typographic Book Showcasing the Unseen Beauty of Umbria

After the devastating earthquake of 2016, the Umbria Region of Italy required a reposition of its communications. This catalog is that journey displaying the cultural riches of unknown areas of the territory. Each of the section index pages was designed focusing on communicating that storytelling. Although mainly a photography journey of light and unseen culture, the textual part of the catalog has been treated to balance the visual story.

Designed by Paul Robb, "Light - Discovering Umbria" is a typographic book that takes readers on a visual and cultural journey through the stunning region of Umbria. Inspired by the links between photography, light, and shadow, this catalog showcases the rich local heritage through a combination of custom typefaces and contemporary layout.

Dynamically anchoring the catalogs are two bespoke typefaces. The first font offers three different combinations, concealing and reflecting words with controlled randomness to emulate the ever-changing lighting situations. Each time the same word is used, it yields different combinations, creating a rhythmic pattern that adds depth to the design.

The second font draws inspiration from the shadows within the photographs and the idea of expanding light. Each letter is extended, characterizing the long-drawn shadows that play a significant role in the visual narrative of the book.

With a volume of 256 pages, "Light - Discovering Umbria" features a cover made through silkscreen printing, adding a tactile and visually appealing element to the design. The internal pages are printed using a 4-color offset technique, ensuring vibrant and high-quality reproductions of the stunning photography.

The technical specifications of the design include a cover made from Fedrigoni sirio black black gr. 290, which adds a touch of elegance and sophistication. The internal pages are printed on Fedrigoni arco design da gr. 140, providing a smooth and durable surface for the captivating visuals and informative text.

Developed as a marketing and branding territorial advertising piece, "Light - Discovering Umbria" aims to requalify and reinforce an optimistic public perception of the region. The project highlights the fact that only 7% of the territory was damaged by the earthquake, dispelling the misrepresented ideas in the press that portrayed the entire region as being 100% damaged.

The book has received recognition for its outstanding design and storytelling. It has been shortlisted for the Italian ADI Design Index - Compasso d'oro 2020 and has won Gold at the Novum Awards 2019. It was also awarded Sustainable Design of the Year at the Novum Awards 2019, further highlighting its commitment to environmental consciousness.

Through extensive research and collaboration with local populations, the design team was able to uncover and showcase the cultural elements and unseen beauty of Umbria. The catalog serves as a testament to the resilience and cultural richness of the region, inviting readers to explore and appreciate its hidden treasures.
