Andaluz Skincare: A Packaging Design Inspired by Moorish Tiles

Celebrating Andalusia's Unique Heritage and Artistry

This secondary packaging design for Andaluz Skincare draws inspiration from the intricate ceramic tiles of the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain. Created by designers Jason Bourguinon and Rebekah Pantaleon, this design combines the beauty of ancient Moorish patterns with modern innovation to create a truly unique packaging experience.

The Alhambra Palace, dating back to the 13th century, is renowned for its breathtaking tile work that adorns the interior walls. These tiles, considered masterpieces of Hispano-Muslim art, served as the main source of inspiration for the Andaluz Skincare packaging design. The designers sought to capture the essence of Andalusia's rich heritage and celebrate its unique geography, architecture, and history.

The packaging design features rolling polygonal tile patterns, reminiscent of the Moorish tiles found in the Alhambra Palace. These patterns, combined with geologically-inspired colors, create a visually striking aesthetic that sets Andaluz Skincare apart from other products in the market. The design showcases the brand's commitment to artisanal, organic skincare, reflecting the natural beauty and authenticity of Andalusia.

Practicality and functionality were also key considerations in the design process. The cylindrical packaging, made from sturdy 600g cardboard, provides protection for the glass bottles during shipping and handling. It also serves as an enclosure for brochure material, allowing customers to learn more about the brand and its products. Additionally, the packaging acts as an extra layer of protection for the natural ingredients, shielding them from light and heat exposure.

Creating this design presented its own set of challenges. The designers had to find a balance between honoring the traditional tile patterns and infusing them with a modern layout and relevant colors. They also worked closely with printers to ensure the intricate details of the design were accurately reproduced.

The Andaluz Skincare packaging design was brought to life using Illustrator, with the final packaging arriving in May 2020. The attention to detail and the incorporation of Andalusia's unique heritage have earned this design the Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category in 2020. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life.

With its captivating blend of ancient artistry and contemporary innovation, the Andaluz Skincare packaging design is a testament to the beauty and creativity that can be found in the intersection of art, architecture, design, and technology.
