Meland: A City of Imagination and Play

Designer Xiang Li's Award-Winning Kids Club Concept

In the bustling cityscape of Wuhan, China, a unique space has emerged that is capturing the hearts of children and adults alike. The Meland Club, designed by Xiang Li, is a kids club that transcends the traditional concept of a play area, transforming it into a city of imagination and play. This innovative design has earned Li the prestigious Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020.

The inspiration behind the Meland Club is the city itself. Xiang Li has skillfully connected different functional areas, each representing a different part of the city. The ball pool, for instance, is designed to resemble an undeveloped jungle at the city's edge, complete with a rich, dramatic stage color that evokes the mystery and grotesqueness of Grimm's fairy tales. Meanwhile, houses that mimic the architectural design of the Potala Palace add a streamlined feel to the entire space.

One of the unique features of the Meland Club is its car-shaped shoe cabinets. Arranged in a row, they not only add a sense of dynamics to the static space but also pique consumer curiosity, drawing their attention to the next space. The restaurant area features chimney-like columns covered with transparent pale pink bubbles, inside which children can play. Dining tables are distributed around these bubbles, allowing parents to keep an eye on their children while making efficient use of the space.

The Meland Club is not just a large indoor playground but a dreamland that breaks through the imagination boundary between adults and children. It's a place where the good times shared between parents and children are preserved. The design of this 3100 sqm project, completed in June 2019, has abandoned the traditional approach of relying on finished entertainment facilities and instead focuses on creating a perfect consumer experience that caters to the psychological needs of diverse target groups.

The high ceiling of the main functional area presented a challenge for the designer, increasing the difficulty of construction. However, it also provided an opportunity for Li to unleash her creativity. The result is a space that balances aesthetics and function, bringing a fantastic imagination to life.

In conclusion, the Meland Club is a testament to Xiang Li's innovative approach to design. It's a space where the narrative connects different spaces through a complete plot and leads consumers on a wonderful journey of parent-child interaction. This project has not only won accolades but also set a new standard in the design of kids clubs, proving that with imagination and creativity, even a play area can become a city of dreams.
