GUILIN: Customisable Environment Cleansing Lamp

A Sculptural Lamp that Purifies the Air

GUILIN, a unique lampscape designed by Kevin Chu, combines art, design, and technology to create a stunning lighting solution that also purifies the air.

Years ago, SUGO design co-founder Kevin Chu embarked on an adventure bicycling trip to Guilin, a picturesque region in China. Inspired by the breathtaking landscape, Chu wanted to pay tribute to the rolling hills of Guilin and capture the essence of Chinese landscapes depicted in art, literature, and movies. This led to the creation of GUILIN, a lamp that beautifully represents the natural beauty of the region.

What sets GUILIN apart is its ability to function as both a lamp and a sculpture. The lamp features etched acrylic mountains that sit on an illuminated base, casting a warm ambient glow in the room. The abstract design of the edge-lit mountains, made from glass-reinforced acrylic, allows light to pass through and creates a mesmerizing effect. The mountains can be arranged and oriented to create a landscape that suits your taste and complements your space.

But GUILIN is more than just a visually stunning lamp. It also serves as a photocatalytic air purifier, using visible light to cleanse the environment of impurities and toxins. This innovative technology unlocks naturally occurring minerals to eliminate bacteria, viruses, CO2, NO2, formaldehyde, odor, and pollen particles, ensuring the air you breathe is clean and fresh. The lamp harnesses the power of light, similar to the sun, to enhance your surroundings and improve the quality of your indoor environment.

The base of GUILIN is coated in environmentally friendly paint, and the acrylic mountains are made from 40% recycled plastic, making it a sustainable choice for eco-conscious individuals. The lamp's design allows for customization, with the option to add more mountains to diffuse additional light, creating a physical and interactive dimming mechanism.

With its combination of artistry, functionality, and environmental consciousness, GUILIN is a true testament to the beauty of nature and the tranquility it brings. Place it on a glossy reflective surface, and you'll feel like you're gazing at mountains reflected in a serene lake.

The GUILIN lamp, designed by Kevin Chu and Giulia DiBonaventura, is a result of meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail. The steel base is sandblasted and coated with sustainable paint, while the acrylic mountains are laser engraved and customizable by the user.

Measuring 640mm in length, 444mm in height, and 100mm in depth, GUILIN can be interconnected as a mountain landscape, allowing you to create a unique and personalized lighting installation.

GUILIN was first conceptualized in July 2017, with the first prototype completed in August 2018. It successfully raised funds through a Kickstarter campaign in February 2020 and is currently in production. The initial batch is expected to be delivered to customers in 19 countries in June 2020.

Recognized for its outstanding design, GUILIN was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category in 2020. This prestigious award celebrates designs that exhibit creativity, resourcefulness, and technical excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

Experience the beauty of GUILIN in your own space and enjoy the perfect blend of art, design, and technology while breathing in clean, purified air.
