Exploring the Unseen: The Art of Nue by Fukuma Umi

Unveiling the Aesthetics of the Ignored: A New Perspective on Weeds

Delving into the world of Nue, a unique photographic project by the acclaimed artist Fukuma Umi, this article explores the artist's inspiration, unique properties, and the challenges faced during its creation.

Derived from a legendary Japanese bird that appears at night, Nue is a metaphor for strange people and things. Fukuma Umi uses this concept to capture the unseen and often ignored aspects of nature - the weeds. These plants, often dismissed as insignificant, are the main subjects of his photographs, representing a dubious presence that has always been there.

While the project is a digital photograph, it reflects a virtual image, making it a unique blend of digital processing and existential expression. It is not just a criticism of modern society but also a thesis for modern people, highlighting the strength and resilience of weeds that thrive despite the harsh conditions.

The technical specifications of the project are as unique as its concept. The photographs are inkjet prints on cotton paper, with dimensions of 1456mm in width and 1030mm in height. The project started in December 2015 in Tokyo and is still ongoing, reflecting the artist's continuous exploration of this theme.

Despite its unique concept and execution, Nue faced several challenges. The project was often misunderstood due to preconceived notions about photography. It was criticized for being too dark, dirty, and digital. However, Fukuma Umi emphasizes that all colors on the screen are controlled, and the darkness is not a hindrance once one gets used to it.

At its core, Nue is a reflection of life. The main motif is natural wood, reflecting the form of life. It may seem unchanging, but it evolves and worsens day by day, reflecting the day-to-day accumulation and continuity. The project is close to the etching technique of painting, further enhancing its uniqueness.

In recognition of its innovative approach and execution, Nue was awarded the Iron A' Photography and Photo Manipulation Design Award in 2020. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements and contribute to a better world.
