Solarpill: Emergency Location Marking Design

Alican Faydalı

Solarpill is a unique design inspired by the story of Hansel and Gretel, providing visual communication in emergency situations. Developed for outdoor enthusiasts and search and rescue teams, this innovative design combines functionality and convenience.

The Solarpill design draws inspiration from the tale of Hansel and Gretel, where the siblings used pebbles to find their way back home. Similarly, Solarpill allows users to visually indicate their location in nature by leaving a trace of light. Whether you're camping, climbing, or part of a search and rescue team, Solarpill ensures you can communicate your whereabouts effectively.

One of the standout features of Solarpill is its dual functionality. The primary mode is the Flashing Mode (or SOS), which enables communication by flashing periodically. The secondary mode provides general lighting for various purposes. By pinning the modules on trees or other suitable surfaces using the grooved needle detail, users can leave a visible mark of their location. Alternatively, the modules can be dropped on the ground or hung for easy visibility.

The realization of the Solarpill design involves a combination of plastic injection molding and liquid silicone rubber injection (LSR) technology. The main body and base are made from ABS plastic, while the rotary key rings are crafted from silicone rubber. Stainless steel is used to add weight to the base and the grooved needle detail, ensuring stability and durability.

The technical specifications of Solarpill include a recharging base measuring 143 x 91 x 26mm, with each module measuring 20 x 20 x 40mm. The modules can charge themselves using solar energy, and an integrated light sensor activates the lighting function only in dark environments. With the ability to recharge independently using sunlight, the modules are always ready for use.

The Solarpill design project took two months to complete and was developed at the DesignInCave Design Studio in Cappadocia, Turkey, in 2019. During the design process, extensive research was conducted to ensure the uniqueness and adaptability of the design. Similar products in the market were explored, and specific attention was given to the geometry of the solar dome and the integration of the grooved needle detail.

Solarpill has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category in 2020. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life.

In conclusion, Solarpill is a groundbreaking design that combines functionality, convenience, and visual communication in emergency situations. With its unique features and adaptability for outdoor use, Solarpill is a valuable tool for individuals and groups working in nature.
