Ascanio Zocchi's Ska V29: A Testament to Nature's Fury and Resilience

Storm-Inspired Dining Table Wins Silver in A' Furniture Design Award 2020

Ascanio Zocchi's Ska V29, a dining table inspired by the aftermath of the Vaia storm, stands as a symbol of nature's fury and resilience. This unique piece of furniture, crafted from storm-felled fir wood, has been recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2020.

The Ska V29, designed by Ascanio Zocchi, is more than just a dining table. It's a representation of the Dolomites' forest after the devastating Vaia storm in 2018. The table top, made from fir wood, depicts a tangle of fallen trunks, their axes overlapping in a decorative weave. The table's edge, inclined and showcasing the wood's end grain, symbolizes nature's precariousness.

The table's base, made of burnished steel, contrasts with the organic texture of the wood. The pieces of the table were cut using CNC machines, assembled using hidden joints in the wood, and glued together. The surface was finished with organic oil pigmented with Siena earth, while the base was coated with scratchproof black oxide powder.

The Ska V29 is not just a piece of furniture, but a statement on sustainability. The fir wood used in its construction was sourced from forests affected by the Vaia storm. For every table produced and sold, a new tree is planted, contributing to the restoration of the devastated Dolomites' forests.

The design process, which took place in the heart of the Dolomites from February to September 2019, involved local workers and sawing the timber on site. Any waste product was given to a nearby district heating plant, ensuring a circular economy project and a certified object.

The Ska V29 is a testament to Zocchi's ability to transform a tragic event into a piece of functional art. It's a reminder of the storm's fury, the devastation it caused, and the resilience of nature. The table's design, inspired by the golden section, is available in different sizes and shapes, and can be made from various wood species such as oak, walnut, ash, beech, and chestnut.

Ascanio Zocchi's Ska V29 is a unique piece of furniture that combines design, sustainability, and a powerful narrative. It's a tribute to the Dolomites' forests and a symbol of their ongoing recovery. This storm-inspired dining table is not just a functional object, but a story of resilience and restoration.
