Interior Credenza: A Design that Provokes Curiosity

Exploring the Intersection of Furniture and Intrigue

The Interior Credenza is designed to surprise observers and stimulate their desire to look further, know more, and find a sense of intrigue. Jurich's exploration led to two key ideas: the concept of furniture as a container that leaves the interior undiscovered, and the role that ubiquitous furniture plays in our engagement with it.

Unlike conventional credenzas, the Interior Credenza is not meant to hide its interior. Instead, it becomes the foundation for viewers to discover the work. Crafted from American Black Walnut and Victorian Ash, the credenza features a unique design that stimulates curiosity and encourages contemplation. Its reflected geometry on all sides allows for spatial possibilities, and there are no limitations as to where it can be positioned.

The manufacturing process of the Interior Credenza was a complex endeavor. It took five months to conceptualize and five weeks to handcraft. The credenza consists of 31 frames, comprising 124 individual components of quarter-sawn Victorian Ash. These frames are assembled with mortise and tenon joints, forming the interior framework. The top and base of the credenza are made from walnut, with the thinnest pieces at each end creating the illusion of holding the entire structure together. The piece is finished with two coats of KUNOS natural resin oil, enhancing its natural beauty.

Measuring 1800mm in width, 500mm in depth, and 760mm in height, the Interior Credenza is a visually striking and thought-provoking addition to any space. Its unique design challenges the conventional perception of furniture and invites viewers to engage with it on a deeper level.

The Interior Credenza was exhibited at the At Scale Exhibition, National Architecture Conference QV1 Perth, Western Australia in May 2014. It has received recognition for its innovative design, winning the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2015. This prestigious award acknowledges the creativity and ingenuity of the design, which authentically combines experience, resourcefulness, and technical skill.
