Less is More: A Chair Design Manifesto by Roberta Rampazzo

Minimalist, Sustainable Furniture Design Inspired by Pandemic Lessons

Inspired by the lessons of the pandemic, designer Roberta Rampazzo has created a chair that embodies comfort, minimalism, and sustainability. The Less is More chair, a winner of the prestigious Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2022, is a testament to the power of thoughtful, socially conscious design.

Roberta Rampazzo's inspiration for the Less is More chair came from the social aspects that have been highlighted during the recent pandemic. The need for comfort, the avoidance of excess, and the importance of sustainability were key elements that influenced her design. The chair's minimalist lines invite users to sit down and appreciate the present moment, reflecting the lessons learned from a global crisis.

The uniqueness of the Less is More chair lies in its embodiment of these key elements. The design prioritizes comfort, quality, and sustainable values, making it a standout piece in today's furniture market. The chair's minimalist lines are not just aesthetically pleasing, but also serve a purpose, encouraging users to focus on the essentials and let go of the unnecessary.

The chair was handmade using sustainable wood, demonstrating Rampazzo's commitment to environmentally friendly design practices. The process of creating the prototype took several months, with a focus on achieving the best results. The chair's dimensions are 550 mm in width, 620 mm in depth, and 760 mm in height, making it a versatile piece that can fit in various spaces.

The design process, which took place from April to October 2021 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, involved several challenges. The backrest's anatomical and organic curves required careful adjustment of the wood's curvature and the foam and seams. Despite these challenges, Rampazzo was able to create a chair with light lines and a high level of comfort.

The Less is More chair is a testament to the power of simplicity in design. As Rampazzo notes, "To be simple it is necessary to eliminate the excesses and the unnecessary and this could be achieved in life and also on the design." This philosophy is clearly reflected in her award-winning chair, which serves as a reminder of the lessons learned during the pandemic and the importance of focusing on the essentials.
