Stirrup: A Reading Couch for the Modern Reader

A Tribute to Miguel de Cervantes in His Fourth Centenary

Inspired by the legacy of Miguel de Cervantes and his passion for reading, designer Juan Manuel Rodriguez Prous presents Stirrup, a unique reading couch that combines ergonomic comfort with contemporary design. With its adjustable position and distinctive aesthetic, Stirrup offers a new way to experience the joy of reading.

What sets Stirrup apart from other reading chairs is its ergonomic design. The carefully studied shape and filling provide exceptional comfort and support, allowing readers to find the perfect position for extended reading sessions. The use of fine materials and the limited production of only 400 pieces add an exclusive touch to this exceptional piece of furniture.

The production process of Stirrup involves a meticulous sequence of steps. Starting with the selection of high-quality leather, the design team researched artistic chromatics from Cervantes' time to ensure an authentic and visually appealing result. The leather is then sewn together using high-resistance thread, and a label displaying the unit number is added. The upper part of the couch is embroidered with a unique ruff, adding to its aesthetic appeal. Finally, the couch is filled to achieve the desired consistency.

Stirrup's adaptability and lightweight design make it easy to transport and place in any reading corner. Its aesthetic and formal qualities, combined with its uniqueness, make it a standout piece in any interior design. Whether in a cozy home library or a modern office space, Stirrup adds a touch of elegance and comfort.

The project, which started in July 2016 in Toledo, Spain, was completed in November 2016. Stirrup was exhibited in Promogift in February 2017, where it received recognition for its exceptional design. The design team faced various challenges during the creative process, including finding the ideal pattern design to ensure the perfect position offered by the couch. They also aimed to break down artisan barriers by combining traditional craft techniques with innovative production methods.

Stirrup's unique design and attention to detail have earned it the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills while contributing to improvements in quality of life. Stirrup's combination of art, science, design, and technology truly makes it a remarkable piece that enhances the reading experience.
