Origami: A Kinetic Table Inspired by the Art of Folding

A Functional and Automated Design Object

Origami is an expandable table that draws inspiration from the ancient oriental technique of folding paper. Designed by Micaela Pignatelli and Ubaldo Occhinegro, this innovative piece evokes the folded surfaces of origami, both in its table top and polygonal base.

What sets Origami apart is its unique mechanical expandability. The square plane of the table can be extended mechanically, increasing its useful dimensions through the deployment of four lateral wings that are folded below the plane. This expansion is achieved through a 90-degree rotation of the table top with respect to its base of support.

The opening and closing of Origami is highly scenographic, thanks to an electromechanical linear actuator hidden beneath the top. When triggered, the top rotates automatically, and four metal rigid rods connected to the rotating plate and the four wings push them outwards, spreading them to the plane. The hinges with two degrees of freedom provide stability during the opening phase.

The foot of the table features a pyramidal trunk shape with an irregular octagonal upper base and a square bottom. The combination of materials used in the construction of Origami is versatile, allowing for the use of wood, plastic, metal, glass, stone, and marble, among others. The table top and foot are adorned with an engraved decoration that replicates a triangular tessellation, mimicking the effect of folding paper in an origami model.

Origami's dimensions are variable, with the top measuring 1.20m x 1.20m when closed and expanding to 2.4m x 2.4m when its wings are opened. This expandable feature allows the table to accommodate more guests or reduce its size to save space, making it a versatile and functional piece of furniture.

The development of the Origami prototype began in September 2016 in Apulia, Italy, and it was exhibited at the Salone del Mobile in April 2017 as part of the Apulia Crossing Identities Exhibition, where it was recognized as one of the best design products from the region.

Origami has garnered attention and accolades for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2018. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.

With its blend of aesthetics and functionality, Origami is a testament to the power of design to transform everyday objects into works of art. Its automatic opening mechanism and attention to detail make it a truly unique and captivating piece that will enhance any living space.
