Water Ripples: A Sculptural Chair That Mimics Nature

Designer Kuo-Hsiang Kuo's Award-Winning Creation Blends Art and Functionality

The chair, made entirely of transparent Polymethyl Methacrylate, is a result of Kuo's passion for exploring new techniques. The design presents the image of condensed ripples, akin to a frozen water surface, providing users with a novel and interesting atmosphere. The chair's transparency allows it to blend seamlessly into various environmental spaces, whether indoors or outdoors. Especially in places with light, its water ripple effect casts natural light and shadow on the ground, enhancing its visual appeal.

Creating this chair was not without its challenges. The material used generates high temperatures during the transition from liquid to solid, resulting in countless small bubbles. However, these bubbles contribute to the chair's overall aesthetic, making it resemble natural water ripples even more closely. The chair's structure also had to meet safety requirements, necessitating the use of 56 kilograms of material to ensure solidity and an average thickness of four centimeters.

Despite these challenges, Kuo's innovative design has been recognized for its creativity and technical prowess. The Water Ripples chair was awarded Silver in the A' Furniture Design Award in 2023. The award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill, and that evoke positive feelings and amazement.
