Urban Literature: A Cozy Public Park in Taichung

A Unique Design Project by Ching-I Wu

The design project of Taichung Literacy Museum and its surrounding landscape parks, created by the talented designer Ching-I Wu, aims to convey the profound historical and literacy developments in Taichung. It provides a cozy environment where local features and lifestyles can continue to thrive over time.

The Taichung Literacy Museum and its surrounding landscape parks break boundaries of spaces, fostering amicable interaction between the public space and the surrounding environment. By integrating areas and creating characteristics for the public space and history, this design project combines the memories of literacy and rearranges the connection of open space between the historical sites and parks.

In this project, the memories of history and public space are beautifully combined. The vintage walls of the old dormitory are preserved, creating a journey of storytelling. The curved wall at the park entry symbolizes the narrow streets and alleys of the past. Behind the bamboo forest, the space is connected to the literacy pathway, adorned with the spiritual symbol of the park. The 100-year-old big tree, the Poetry wall adjoining Zili Street, and the wide square all come together to create the perfect place for community interaction.

Spanning across 15,287.57 square meters, this design project showcases the harmonious interdependence between people and scenery. The flowing rivers, shades of trees, laughter of children, footsteps on gravel, and earthy scents all embody the wonderful histories and lives of Taichung. It serves as a draft of Taichung literacy, providing people with an excellent public place with diverse features.

The Taichung Literacy Museum and its surrounding landscape parks are conveniently located in Taichung City, Taiwan. The project was completed on February 3, 2020. With a well-developed public transportation system, visitors can easily access this area. Whether by train, bus, taxi, or car, there are multiple routes to reach this cultural haven.

This design project overcame various challenges, including reconciling the space of the community and integrating the connections of parks. With the guidance of historical space, visitors can discover the literature and poems behind the history and nature, providing an entertaining and educational experience of space.

Ching-I Wu's design project, Taichung Literacy Museum and its surrounding landscape parks, has been recognized for its excellence. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in Landscape Planning and Garden Design in 2020. This prestigious award honors designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
