Dowell Time Axis: A Unique Residential Landscape Design

The Dowell Time Axis project, located in Zhejiang, China, is a testament to the power of innovative design in transforming limited spaces into vibrant and functional landscapes. The design team, led by Jie Jin, recognized the challenges posed by the long and narrow residential community. However, they embraced these limitations and used straight line elements to connect different areas within the community, creating a cohesive and visually striking landscape.

One of the standout features of Dowell Time Axis is the concept of "one courtyard, two axes, and multiple gardens." The Time Axis, Season Axis, Social Courtyard, Children's Playground, and Sports Line are carefully integrated into the design, providing residents with a range of experiences and activities.

The Time Axis, which greets visitors upon entering the park, is a visually captivating element. Guided pavements, adorned with various colors and shapes, not only create an interesting walking experience but also divide the axis into different functional zones. Vertical planting of diverse flora, including Chinese tallow trees, magnolias, and osmanthus trees, adds to the beauty of the axis, providing residents with ever-changing scenes throughout the year.

The Social Courtyard serves as a vital gathering space for the neighborhood, fostering communication and community engagement. Comprising a landscape porch and a lush lawn, the Social Courtyard offers panoramic views and a refreshing green oasis for relaxation. The Children's Playground, dominated by vibrant orange hues, is designed with geometric paving, creating distinct functional areas suitable for children of all ages.

Furthermore, the Sports Line, seamlessly integrated throughout the residential area, offers a range of sports facilities for residents to enjoy a healthy and active lifestyle. From a whole-area runway to adult fitness areas and an elderly health garden, the Sports Line caters to the diverse needs and preferences of the community.

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Dowell Time Axis ensures that residents can enjoy outdoor recreation within the community, even during lockdowns. The design incorporates perfect facilities that meet the residents' needs, providing a safe and accessible space for outdoor activities without the need for contact with external unauthorized personnel.

Another noteworthy aspect of the design is its commitment to sustainability. The park features a rainwater harvesting system, which not only maximizes the use of natural resources but also helps alleviate flooding, contributing to the concept of a sponge city.

The Dowell Time Axis project, completed in 2021, has garnered recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in Landscape Planning and Garden Design in 2022. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that exhibit creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life.
