Huade: City Visual Identity

A Unique Design Inspired by History and Patriotism

The city of Huade, once an important military base for defending China's northern frontiers, has transformed its abandoned military facilities into a thriving military experience and tourism industry. To promote urban economic development and increase the city's popularity, renowned designer Fu Yong has created a captivating visual identity inspired by a simple yet powerful symbol: the button.

The design of Huade's city visual identity is centered around the pause and start symbols commonly found on buttons. These symbols represent the idea of suspending busy work and embarking on a journey of military experience in Huade. Combining these symbols with the pentagram, which is both the English abbreviation HD of Huade and a significant element of the Chinese army's banner and military epaulets, the design pays homage to the heroes who defended the country during the war.

The city logo serves as a unique label for Huade, conveying its most important characteristics to the public. The graphics of the logo are carefully crafted to possess both cultural and historical significance, while maintaining a modern aesthetic. The material of the sign is selected based on the usage environment, ensuring optimal recognition of the pentagram, even in smaller applications.

Whether presented on a white background or against a red background, the logo forms a unified visual style that can be easily recognized and associated with Huade. This versatility allows the logo to be used across various mediums, reinforcing the city's brand identity.

Fu Yong embarked on extensive research and conducted surveys in Huade to fully understand the city's history and current situation. Through interviews with citizens, professionals, and government officials, it became evident that the previous military base was the most representative symbol of the city. The challenge was to express this history in a modern visual language, which led to the discovery of the pentagram as a common symbol associated with the military.

The Huade city visual identity project commenced in July 2019 in Beijing and was completed in February 2020. The design's unique combination of historical significance and modern aesthetics earned it the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2020. This award recognizes designs that are well-designed, practical, and innovative, meeting professional and industrial requirements. The Huade city visual identity stands as a testament to the integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, contributing to a better world.

With its captivating design inspired by history and patriotism, the Huade city visual identity serves as a powerful symbol of the city's transformation and its commitment to honoring its past while embracing the future.
