Spike: A Lamp Inspired by Social Distancing and Fashion Subcultures

Unique Contrasts and Tension in Interior Design

The Spike lamp, designed by Sini Majuri, combines elements of social distancing and fashion subcultures to create a unique and visually striking piece. With its aggressive appearance and contrasting materials, Spike adds tension and sophistication to any interior.

The inspiration for the Spike lamp comes from the concept of social distancing and the fashion subcultures that embrace spikes and sharp edges. The design aims to mimic the contrariety of nature, where simplicity becomes complexity. The lamp's core materials are a mold-made ceramic sphere and metal spikes, both of which have shiny surfaces that reflect the environment. The interior of the lamp, in contrast, features a warm and smooth texture.

What sets the Spike lamp apart is its play with contrasts. It reflects the spiky fashion of punk culture while also exuding a calm Scandinavian mood. The lamp's voluminous form is balanced by the focused warm light that illuminates only a small pointy area underneath. This combination of aggressive appearance and soothing light creates a captivating tension within the lamp and its surroundings.

The Spike lamp is made using a two-sided plaster mold. The outer surface of the ceramic object is spray glazed to achieve its smooth and reflective finish. The light source is a dimmable LED, providing versatility in creating the desired ambiance.

Technical specifications of the Spike lamp include a ceramic part diameter of 350 mm x 320 mm. With the spikes, the lamp's overall diameter measures 450 mm x 370 mm.

Throughout the design process, the objective was to simplify mathematical shapes reminiscent of virus-like forms into an aesthetic outcome with a philosophical approach to social distancing. The challenge lay in creating a sophisticated piece with high-quality materials while maintaining its startling pulchritude.

The Spike lamp, with its aggressive yet calming presence, adds a touch of intrigue to any interior. It is a testament to the designer's ability to merge contrasting elements and create a visually captivating piece. The lamp has already garnered recognition, winning the Iron A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures category in 2020.
