Scacco Matto: A Radical Approach to Portable Lighting

Francesco Cappuccio's award-winning design redefines the role of light in our homes

Scacco Matto, which translates to 'checkmate' in Italian, is a nod to the game of chess. The design features three elements connected by magnets, allowing users to create five different light settings. From atmospheric to focused light, Scacco Matto encourages users to explore the transformative power of light in their homes. The design's versatility extends beyond lighting, with the potential to be used as a vase or a sculptural dinner light.

One of the unique properties of Scacco Matto is its interactive nature. The user is invited to manipulate the three magnetically connected elements to create different light sculptures. This interactive feature encourages a deeper appreciation of the role of light in shaping the atmosphere of our living spaces.

The realization of Scacco Matto involved overcoming technical challenges. The design incorporates a sizable 4400mAh battery and a USB connector for the LED chip within the head, all without compromising the overall proportions. The initial mockup was created in wood, but the final product is made from Aluminum, making it suitable for outdoor use.

The project, which started in July 2022 in Bangkok, was driven by a desire to investigate the unexpected and emotional impacts of light at home. The result is a design that not only serves a functional purpose but also invites users to engage with it on a deeper, more personal level.

Scacco Matto's innovative design and unique approach to lighting have earned it recognition in the design world. In 2023, it won the Silver A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award, a prestigious accolade awarded to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The award is a testament to Cappuccio's creative vision and his ability to push the boundaries of design.
