Architectural Services Department HKSARG Transforms Refuse Collection with Innovative Design

The Green Recovery Station is not just a refuse collection point; it represents a fresh, new image of waste management. The building, which contains extensive greenery to harmonize with its surroundings, is partly visible through a glass facade along the pedestrian walkway. This transparency aims to engage the community and exhibit waste recovery operations, promoting sustainability as not just necessary, but enjoyable.

The building's unique design is determined by the precise positioning and organization of waste treatment machines. Arranged in height order, these machines create an efficient, sloping rooftop fit for material recovery operations. The facility includes a material recovery store, water scrubber room, recycling vehicle loading space, office, and staff toilets.

The Green Recovery Station was constructed using steel members connected by bolts and nuts. This dry construction method minimized the duration of site works and manpower, resulting in better site management. Building Information Modelling (BIM) was used during the design stage to integrate precast elements such as external block walls, sandwich panels, and aluminum fins, achieving a LEAN construction.

The refuse collection point also features small building blocks integrated with greenery and outdoor courtyards to facilitate natural ventilation. The full-height glass facade allows natural light to pour into the internal space, creating a pleasant working environment for the staff. The use of natural materials, the integration of greenery and courtyards, and the transparent outlook break the traditional image of refuse collection points as dark and unwelcoming.

The Green Recovery Station is more than a refuse collection point; it's a symbol of Hong Kong's commitment to sustainability. The station, which was awarded Silver in the A' Architecture, Building, and Structure Design Award in 2021, promotes the concept of pleasurable sustainability and instills a green living culture in the community. It serves as a reminder that sustainability can be integrated into every aspect of our lives, even in places as unexpected as a refuse collection point.
