Elytra: A Nature-Inspired, Space-Saving Coffee Table

Radhika Dhumal's Award-Winning Design Expands Like a Beetle's Wings

Radhika Dhumal's Elytra, a coffee table inspired by the anatomy of a beetle, is a unique blend of form and function. It's a space-saving design that expands its surface area when needed, offering a dynamic and interactive experience for users.

Radhika Dhumal, a designer known for her innovative approach, has created a coffee table that is not only functional but also a conversation starter. Named Elytra, after the hardened wings of beetles, the table mimics the insect's ability to expand and contract its wings. This nature-inspired design has earned Dhumal the prestigious Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2021.

The Elytra coffee table is more than just a piece of furniture; it's a testament to the beauty of biomimicry in design. The table's surface is divided into four sections: a wooden 'head' and 'body', and two glass-inlay wings. These wings can be spread out simultaneously, much like a beetle preparing for flight, to increase the table's surface area. This feature allows users to accommodate extra items such as cups, planters, or notebooks, making Elytra a versatile addition to any living space.

Dhumal's design process began with intensive sketching and doodling, followed by the creation of scaled-down mockups using laser-cut MDF parts to figure out the kinetic mechanism. The final product was realized using CNC-cut teak wood, resulting in a precise and finished product. The table, when closed, measures 450mm x 750mm x 475mm, and expands to a width of 1180mm when the wings are opened.

What sets Elytra apart from other coffee tables is its interactive nature. The table can be easily operated by pulling apart the edge of one wing, causing the other wing to open up simultaneously. This smooth transformation, reminiscent of a beetle's movement, is the key characteristic of the Elytra table. When the extra space is not required, the wings can be pushed back to align parallelly with the table's body.

The Elytra coffee table was first displayed at the National Institute of Design's Aquarium Display Gallery in July 2019, following its completion in May 2019 in Ahmedabad, India. Its unique design and functionality have not only earned it accolades but also highlighted the potential of nature-inspired design in enhancing everyday objects.

In conclusion, Radhika Dhumal's Elytra is a perfect example of how design, inspired by nature, can transform a simple piece of furniture into a dynamic, interactive, and space-saving solution. It's a testament to the designer's creativity and innovation, and a worthy recipient of the Silver A' Furniture Design Award.
