High Heel Church: A Galaxy of Light and Romance

Chia Yu Lin and Hsin Mo Tsai's Innovative Lighting Design Illuminates a Unique Architectural Marvel

Chia Yu Lin and Hsin Mo Tsai, renowned designers, have transformed the High Heel Church in Taiwan into a mesmerizing spectacle of light and romance. Their innovative lighting design, which incorporates 300,000 pieces of glass and 101 light fixtures, has breathed new life into this unique architectural marvel, creating an immersive and romantic experience for visitors.

The High Heel Church, standing 17 meters high and 11 meters wide, is certified by the Guinness World Records as "the largest building in the shape of shoes". This unique structure, composed of 1,269 steel frames and 320 pieces of blue glass, is located on a seaside in Chiayi, Taiwan. The designers' vision was to connect with the building's unique texture and coexist with the natural beauty of the park, creating a galaxy-like vision that shines day and night.

The design process involved extensive research, including interviewing local residents and analyzing the light, wind, and landscape vision. The designers faced the challenge of making the heavy structure appear light and uncrushed, and coexisting with the natural beauty during the day and night. They used a highly reflective material to let the reflection of light spread all over the park, and calculated light angles to make the church resemble a galaxy.

Every hour, the church presents a light show with romantic music, creating an immersive performance space. The lighting design allows people to walk inside the church during the show, offering a relaxing, romantic, and immersive experience. The sound, lighting, and smoke are created around the space, enhancing the overall atmosphere.

The High Heel Church's transformation has been well-received by both residents and tourists. The park, once considered too dark and featureless at night, now attracts visitors who come to dance, take pictures, and enjoy the romantic atmosphere. The starry sky, reflected in the church's glass, adds to the overall enchantment of the place.

The High Heel Church's innovative lighting design has earned it the Silver A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2021, a testament to the designers' outstanding expertise and innovation. The award recognizes top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
