Gla Gla: An Educational Puzzle Reviving the Glagolitic Script

A Unique Design by Ana Banic Gottlicher and Ivana Peko

The Gla Gla puzzle, designed by Ana Banic Gottlicher and Ivana Peko, is an educational puzzle that brings to life the ancient Glagolitic script, a significant feature of Croatian history and culture. With its unique design and educational value, Gla Gla offers a captivating way to learn and appreciate the Old Slavic script.

The inspiration for the Gla Gla puzzle came from the Tourist Board of the Croatian town of Krk, which awarded it the label of the original town of Krk souvenir. The puzzle represents a reflection of the town's artistic, cultural, and historical heritage, showcasing its tangible, intangible, and natural treasures. It is a true gift from Krk, encapsulating the essence of the town.

What sets the Gla Gla puzzle apart is its incorporation of the Glagolitic alphabet, a script created in the 9th century and used in Croatian regions until the 19th century. The puzzle combines Christian symbolism with the Glagolitic script, with each of its 25 characters linked to the Latin letters of the alphabet. This design choice allows for easy learning and connection of not only the form but also the meaning of the letters.

The Gla Gla puzzle is made using black MDF and olive tree boards, which are cut and milled using a CNC machine. The boards are then protected with linseed oil, ensuring their durability and longevity. The puzzle pieces are connected using magnetic plates, providing a seamless and secure fit.

Measuring 340 x 280 x 32 mm, the Gla Gla puzzle is a compact and portable educational tool. By opening the box, players are greeted with 25 Glagolitic letters cut from olive tree wood. Underneath these letters are the corresponding Latin letters, aiding in memory and the formation of Glagolitic words. The outlines of the letters can be traced on paper, allowing users to practice and create their first Glagolitic words.

The Gla Gla puzzle project began in January 2020 and was completed in March 2020 in Zagreb, Croatia. It was later exhibited at the Zagreb Design Week in August 2020, showcasing its innovative design and educational value.

Throughout the design process, the team faced several challenges, including learning the intricacies of the Glagolitic script and designing typography suitable for industrial production. Additionally, the magnetic connection between the puzzle pieces required careful engineering to ensure a seamless and secure fit.

The Gla Gla puzzle is not only a captivating educational tool but also a distinctly Croatian souvenir. It condenses thousands of years of culture into a game, allowing users to piece together bits of Croatian history from the island of Krk and create new stories and words in any language. Its unique design and educational value have earned it the Bronze A' Design Award in the Toys, Games, and Hobby Products category in 2021.
