Rocking Zebra: A Modern Twist on a Classic Toy

Newmakers Reimagines the Iconic Rocking Horse for the Contemporary Home

The Rocking Zebra, a creation by Newmakers, is a modern reinterpretation of the classic rocking horse. This innovative design, which combines aesthetics, advanced production techniques, and sustainable materials, has won the prestigious Golden A' Toys, Games and Hobby Products Design Award in 2013.

Designed with a conscious effort to create a product that is not only fun but also a striking addition to any modern home, the Rocking Zebra is a testament to Newmakers' commitment to innovation. The rocking toy range is modular, allowing for different character types to cater to regional preferences. Furthermore, the design is flat-pack and weighs less than 10kg, making it ideal for international courier delivery. The entire production process is UK-based, reflecting Newmakers' dedication to local manufacturing.

The Rocking Zebra stands out due to its use of innovative surfacing materials and advanced production techniques. The flat-pack construction is specifically designed to meet the demands of online sales channels. A modular parts system allows for character extensions that reflect global market trends and preferences. The use of advanced, custom print laminate surfaces ensures that the product is scratch-resistant. Automated production allows for a return to UK-based manufacturing.

The Rocking Zebra is made from solid birch timber and birch plywood, both FSC certified and sourced from the EU. The production technology used is CNC, with all wood surfaces left untreated to highlight their natural qualities. No paints are used, as these are often associated with increased safety concerns. The product dimensions are L90 x H52 x W30cm, and it weighs 7.5kg. The packaging dimensions are L96 x H9 x W52cm, and it weighs 9.5kg.

Research was carried out regarding global/regional aesthetics, materials, production techniques, and sales channels. The aim was to balance aesthetics, automated production, and innovative/sustainable materials use into a scalable product range optimized for direct B2C sales and wholesale shipping efficiency. The design challenge involved retaining the essential character of a classic heirloom toy, while using advanced techniques and a modular construction system to allow for future additional animal types with minimal part changes.

The Rocking Zebra project started in September 2008 in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand, and finished in May 2012 in Totnes, UK. The prototype was exhibited at the London Design Festival 2011. The design has been well-received, with children loving the playful rocking toy and adults appreciating its contemporary look, funky graphics, and natural wood.

In conclusion, the Rocking Zebra by Newmakers is a perfect example of how a classic design can be reimagined to fit into the modern world. It is a testament to the power of innovation and the importance of sustainable design. The product's success, as evidenced by its Golden A' Design Award, shows that it is possible to create a product that is both fun and aesthetically pleasing, while also being sustainable and efficient in its production.
