TwoSuns is not your typical puzzle. It is a beautifully crafted work of art that combines storytelling, design, and interactivity. The puzzles are constructed using wood and laser-cutting techniques, representing the Bunun tribe's location in the central mountains of Taiwan and the drought and burn caused by the two suns in the story.
What sets TwoSuns apart is its use of a constructed language based on visual forms. The symbols on the puzzles are created logically, with each symbol representing a noun or a verb. This unique approach allows users to decode the symbols and understand the story with the help of a fabric dictionary, which is printed with the symbols' meanings and instructions.
When users open the box, they are greeted with the puzzle pieces on top and the fabric dictionary at the bottom. Each puzzle piece has its associated plate, making it easy to figure out the sequence without guidance. The symbols on the puzzle pieces are carefully designed to be intuitive and engaging, inviting users to explore the spiritual Bunun story.
The creation of TwoSuns was not without its challenges. Simplifying the forms and shapes of the puzzles while maintaining their meaning was a creative and technical hurdle. The designer aimed to make the puzzles more intuitive and obvious, allowing users to complete them with ease. The result is a visually stunning and intellectually stimulating experience.
Chih-Yuan Chang's TwoSuns project was created from October 2018 to November 2018. The designer conducted extensive research, drawing inspiration from the iconic elements of Bunun culture, such as circles, squares, and lines found in their fabrics and tattoos. Feedback from individuals unfamiliar with the story confirmed the project's success in engaging and intriguing users.
TwoSuns has received recognition for its outstanding design and creativity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category in 2021. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
TwoSuns is not just a puzzle; it is a work of art that tells a captivating story. By combining visual language, craftsmanship, and interactive elements, Chih-Yuan Chang has created a design that not only entertains but also educates and sparks curiosity. TwoSuns is a testament to the power of design in preserving and sharing cultural heritage.
