Reviving the Tang Dynasty: A Unique Mooncake Packaging Design

Recreating the Magnificence of the Tang Dynasty through Innovative Packaging

Delving into the world of design, Litete Brand Design has created a unique and innovative packaging for Chinese mooncakes, drawing inspiration from the grandeur of the Tang Dynasty. This article explores the design process, unique features, and the cultural significance behind this award-winning creation.

The Chinese Mooncake packaging by Litete Brand Design is a remarkable blend of history, culture, and design. The design team, led by Creative Director Langcer Lee, embarked on a journey to recreate the magnificent scenery of the Tang Dynasty palace. After consulting numerous historical documents, viewing images of murals at Dunhuang, and visiting ancient buildings from the Tang Dynasty, the team used these elements as the basis for creating a design that restores the Tang Dynasty's historical prosperity.

The unique properties of this design lie in its intricate details. The gift box is based on an aerial layout and embroidery drawing that represents a Tang Dynasty banquet. It highlights the dynasty's magnificent wooden architecture and reproduces Yang Guifei's graceful dance movements. The inner box was designed based on dance movements from Rainbow Skirt and Feather Coat, combined with classical Chinese colors such as royal purple and bamboo green to reflect the Tang Dynasty's grandeur, the Chinese classics' elegance, and wishes for a happy life.

The design realization technology involves a three-dimensional paper sculpture to separate the characters and scenes through die-cutting, creating a layered effect. The outer box as a whole is a traditional Chinese food box style, and when the consumer opens the box, a complete illustration pops up in front of them.

The project started in Tianjin in July 2020 and was completed in August 2020. The design was exhibited in Tianjin in September 2020. The Mid-Autumn Festival, a traditional festival celebrated in China, served as the inspiration for this design. The festival gained widespread popularity in the Tang Dynasty and became a nationwide holiday. The design team faced the challenge of restoring the architecture, costumes, makeup, musical instruments, and dance poses due to limited historical records. However, through extensive research, they managed to recreate the scene effectively.

This design was awarded the Golden A' Packaging Design Award in 2021, a testament to its marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creation. The award recognizes designs that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics. The Chinese Mooncake packaging by Litete Brand Design is a perfect example of such a design, reflecting the designer's prodigy and wisdom.
