The MIXc Kunshan: A Fusion of Tradition and Innovation

Xiang Li's Award-Winning Design Celebrates Kunqu Opera in a Modern Kids Area

In the heart of Kunshan, a city known as the birthplace of Kunqu Opera, a unique design project has emerged. The MIXc Kunshan, a 4500 sqm kids area in a shopping mall, is a testament to the innovative vision of designer Xiang Li. This project, which integrates elements of traditional culture into a modern business space, has been recognized with a Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021.

The inspiration for The MIXc Kunshan comes from the city's rich cultural heritage. Xiang Li aimed to create a public area that not only serves a commercial purpose but also educates visitors about traditional culture. The result is a space that breaks away from the norms of public area design, offering a unified theme and an unprecedented consumer experience.

The uniqueness of The MIXc Kunshan lies in its innovative approach to incorporating traditional elements. Using a child-friendly design language, Xiang Li has transformed elements of Kunqu Opera, such as Yunjian, long sleeves, horsetail whisk, Kuitou, facial makeup, and musical instruments, into adorable symbols that children can easily relate to. These elements are not just decorative; they are also incorporated into signboards and installations, enhancing the identity of the children's section and setting a playful mood.

The project was realized through careful planning and creative use of space. Xiang Li designed several points of interest in the space, including customized soft furnishings that serve as seats and interactive points for consumers. The high-rise space in the parent-child park area was transformed into an open reception area, attracting foot traffic for the shops and providing a view for consumers in the mall.

A significant challenge in this project was balancing the actual functions of the space with the unity of theme aesthetics. However, Xiang Li and his team, including Project Directors Fan Chen and Zhang Wenji, were successful in creating a new type of consumer experience. The result is a public area that presents an overall visual aesthetic and offers an immersive consumption experience that drives consumer interest and enriches their experience.

The MIXc Kunshan is a testament to the power of design in bridging the gap between tradition and modernity. It is a celebration of Kunshan's cultural heritage, presented in a way that is accessible and appealing to the younger generation. This project is not just a design achievement; it is a cultural milestone that carries forward the charm of traditional opera in a modern setting.
