Revolutionizing Co-working Spaces: theDesk UC Strand 50 Bridge 8

Cocoon Architecture Ltd. Redefines Co-working Spaces in Hong Kong and Shanghai

How can a co-working space maintain its identity across different sites and configurations? Cocoon Architecture Ltd. answers this question with theDesk UC Strand 50 Bridge 8, a trio of co-working spaces in Hong Kong and Shanghai that have been awarded the Iron A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021.

The Large, Medium, and Small sites of theDesk UC Strand 50 Bridge 8 each offer a unique experience to its users. The Large site in Central, Hong Kong, is spread horizontally on one full floor, creating a Central Park-like space that can serve up to 450 people. This open space acts as a landmark for orientation, with a series of spaces layered between it and the main lift lobby, creating a sense of approach.

The Medium site in Shanghai is split across two levels, with a grand staircase in the Common Space connecting the two. This staircase also doubles as a theatre that can accommodate up to 100 people for events, creating a dynamic and flexible space.

The Small site in Hong Kong West is distributed across multiple floors, with intimate Common Spaces scattered as small gathering spaces. Each of these sites has been designed with a focus on user experience and space crafting, providing a less ornamented white space that allows members to add their own color.

These co-working spaces were completed between 2019 and 2020, with the Large site having a floor area of 3,200sq.m. x 1 storey, the Medium site having a floor area of 1,000sq.m. x 2 storeys, and the Small site having a floor area of 400sq.m. x 5 storeys. The design team, consisting of YUNG Chung Kwong and CHIU Hang Mei Mary Grace, faced the challenge of providing a blank canvas for members while maintaining the identity of the co-working space.

Despite these challenges, theDesk UC Strand 50 Bridge 8 has managed to create a unique identity for each site while maintaining the mission of the co-working space: to create an inclusive community. Members can leverage the community intelligence through offline events at the Common Space, with the Large, Medium, and Small sites each offering a unique treatment to this concept.

In conclusion, theDesk UC Strand 50 Bridge 8 by Cocoon Architecture Ltd. is a testament to the potential of co-working spaces. By carefully shaping the Common Space and focusing on user experience, these spaces have managed to create a unique identity for each site while fostering an inclusive community. With their innovative design, it's no wonder they were awarded the Iron A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021.
