Elegant: A Cozy and Modern French Country Style Residential House

Integrating Coziness and Modernity

The house owners from Hong Kong desired a space that seamlessly blended cozy and modern French country style. Designer Chiang Chen-Wei, known for his innovative approach, incorporated geometric window grilles and vintage furniture to evoke the simplicity of their past in Hong Kong. By combining a modern touch with blue-grey walls, wooden furniture, and colorful paintings, Chiang Chen-Wei created a space that exudes coziness, not just as a style, but as a feeling.

Chiang Chen-Wei understood that each space needed its own unique look to prevent a sense of isolation. To achieve this, he strategically placed a filigree window in the foyer and another between the study room and kitchen. Despite the presence of two large girders beside the sofa, Chiang Chen-Wei designed a wall storage unit with eight cabinets to fulfill the homeowners' storage needs.

The realization of this design involved various techniques and materials, including island wood flooring, veneer, system cabinets, laser cutting, shutters, and quartz stone. The result is a stunning 1,958 square feet residential house that stands out with its cozy elegance and French country charm.

Chiang Chen-Wei's design team, led by the talented designer himself, meticulously brought this vision to life. Their collaboration and attention to detail ensured that every aspect of the design was executed flawlessly.

What sets this design apart is its ability to create a harmonious and inviting atmosphere. Chiang Chen-Wei encourages homeowners to imagine what "home" means to them and what colors represent that feeling. By understanding their desires and preferences, he can transform their dream place into a reality.

The project commenced in January 2019 and was completed in June 2019. Throughout the process, Chiang Chen-Wei conducted extensive research to meet the homeowners' daily life demands. With two adults and a dog, the interior design needed to be practical and penetrative. To prioritize the occupants' health, non-formaldehyde paint was used in all wooden furniture. Additionally, the kitchen space was maximized to accommodate the housewife's cooking interests.

Despite the challenges faced during the design process, such as the higher cost of non-formaldehyde paint, Chiang Chen-Wei remained committed to prioritizing the homeowners' well-being. He explained that in the past, he had used solid wood furniture. However, due to high humidity and the risk of termite infestation in Taiwan, formaldehyde had become prevalent. To ensure the occupants' health, Chiang Chen-Wei strongly recommended the use of non-formaldehyde paint.

Chiang Chen-Wei's design philosophy revolves around creating unique styles for each space, tailored to the homeowners' preferences. The integration of American modern and French country styles was at the core of his vision. To avoid a sense of isolation, he strategically incorporated a filigree window in the foyer and another between the study room and kitchen. Despite the presence of two large girders beside the sofa, Chiang Chen-Wei designed a wall storage unit with eight cabinets to fulfill the homeowners' request. The result is a space that may not use expensive materials, but is undoubtedly the best for the owners.

The stunning visuals accompanying this article were captured by the talented photographer Lin Fu Ming. Their contribution to showcasing the elegance and charm of this design is greatly appreciated.
