Designed by Tyler Kimball, the Cellular architectural glass windows offer a unique and contemporary take on stained glass. The design features hand-blown glass rondels fabricated into brass-reinforced leaded panels. These 36 panels, retro-fitted into commercial aluminum framing, are located within the vestibule and the vertical window of a brand new healthcare center at the Truman Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
The strength of this design lies in its ability to harness natural light and create vibrant color splashes within the space. As sunlight passes through the hand-blown glass, it interacts with the surrounding environment, breathing life into the walls. Throughout the day, the shifting light creates ever-changing landscapes of color, providing a dynamic and engaging experience for visitors and occupants.
Each piece of blown glass is unique, adding to the overall visual appeal of the design. The panels have been carefully crafted using brass-reinforced lead and cemented into place, ensuring their sturdiness and structural integrity for years to come. The use of lock-in sashes in the aluminum framing allows for easy access to each individual panel, facilitating maintenance and upkeep.
Measuring 45 square meters, the Cellular architectural glass windows took nine months from concept to realization. The design team at Monarch Glass Studio, led by Tyler Kimball, worked tirelessly to bring this vision to life. The installation process involved the collaboration of the studio's employees, who ensured the panels were securely and precisely placed within the healthcare center.
Not only does the Cellular design enhance the aesthetics of the space, but it also serves a functional purpose. The ambient glow emitted from within the building during the dark hours acts as a beacon, radiating color and design into the surrounding area. This integration of art and architecture creates a harmonious environment that uplifts and inspires.
The Cellular architectural glass windows have received recognition for their outstanding design. In 2021, they were awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and technical excellence. The Cellular design stands out for its incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to the improvement of quality of life.
