The Mountain View: A Distinctive Mix-Used Cultural Complex

Renovating and Repurposing a Building to Connect Nature and Art

The client and architects saw new possibilities, hoping to bring people back to the building and feel the unique beauty of nature. The Mountain View is a mix-used cultural complex that integrates diversified functional spaces such as stores, restaurants, art galleries, theaters, and workspaces.

Located in Shenzhen, China, The Mountain View is a testament to the transformative power of design. Designed by Zhang Bo and Wang Jingjing of Onexn Architects, this project aimed to create a distinctive cultural complex that seamlessly blends nature, art, and commerce. The architects renovated and repurposed an existing building, breathing new life into it and creating a space that captivates visitors.

The inspiration for The Mountain View came from the desire to bring people closer to nature and create a space that fosters creativity and cultural exchange. The architects wanted to establish a new dialogue between the building and its surroundings, allowing visitors to experience the unique beauty of nature while engaging with various cultural activities.

One of the key design features of The Mountain View is the open-air veranda that surrounds the central courtyard. This veranda not only connects different areas of the complex but also seamlessly blends the space into nature. Supported by rectangular steel pillars arranged in a matrix, the veranda creates a sense of lightness and order.

The interior of The Mountain View is a testament to the architects' attention to detail and commitment to creating a unique experience. The restaurant floor, for example, is covered with various materials such as greenery, pebbles, corrosion-resistant wooden panels, and cement. This combination of materials demarcates different functional spaces and adds visual interest to the interior.

Throughout the design process, the architects faced various challenges, including optimizing the spatial layout to accommodate multiple operations and ensuring that the old building met current standards. However, through careful planning and close collaboration with the construction team, they were able to overcome these challenges and create a safe and beautiful building that meets all requirements.

Since its completion, The Mountain View has become a vibrant cultural hub, hosting numerous events such as drama festivals, lectures, and art exhibitions. It has attracted a large number of local citizens and has become a popular destination for those seeking a "slow space" where they can socialize, interact with nature, and appreciate art.

The Mountain View was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2021. This prestigious award recognizes the outstanding creativity and resourcefulness of the design, as well as its contribution to improving the quality of life. The Mountain View exemplifies the power of design to create spaces that inspire, connect, and enrich our lives.
