Solar Veloroute: A Multifunctional Photovoltaic Structure by Peter Kuczia

A Sustainable and Aesthetic Solution for Modern Transportation

Designed by Peter Kuczia, the Solar Veloroute is a multifunctional photovoltaic structure that not only provides a sustainable solution for modern transportation but also serves as an architectural symbol for the shift from gas-powered cars to more sustainable modes of mobility.

The Solar Veloroute is inspired by the increasing importance of bike roads in modern transportation concepts in cities and peripheral areas. The idea of covering these routes with aesthetically pleasing, electricity-generating photovoltaic modules transforms them into attractive landscape structures. This not only promotes sustainability but also creates a sculptural variety that symbolizes the transition from gas-powered cars to greener modes of transport.

What sets the Solar Veloroute apart is its dual functionality. The solar canopy shields cyclists from the weather while producing electrical energy from the sun. The photovoltaic modules generate electricity for bicycle charging stations and the lighting of the route. This design is realized using a multifunctional photovoltaic system, ENVELOROUTE, with PV-Panels ENVELON Materia.

One kilometer of this Veloroute could provide around 2000 MWh of electricity, enough to power 750 households or provide electricity for more than 1,000 electric cars driving 11,000 kilometers per year. The supporting structure consists of a repeatable round arch, with non-reflective glass-glass solar panels attached to round tube steel purlins. A fabric membrane provides additional protection and gently distributes light.

The Solar Veloroute is not just a functional structure but also serves as an educational tool. The eye-catching solar structures attract the attention of passers-by, and are used to educate about sustainability. Displays provide information about various aspects of solar energy use, leading to better understanding and acceptance of solar solutions. This concept has been created for districts in Switzerland and Dubai but can be applied to any climatic zone.

The project's goal was to develop a highly aesthetic structure that could be built quickly and inexpensively at any location using a few repeatable steel elements and one type of rectangular photovoltaic module. The construction has been parametrically developed and can be adapted to any common bike road width, and can follow any curve of the route. Also, the number of rows of panels, the distance between modules, as well as their inclination can be flexibly adjusted to local conditions.

The Solar Veloroute by Peter Kuczia was awarded Silver in A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2021, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation. It is a remarkable design that introduces positive feelings, amazement, and wonder, showcasing a remarkable level of excellence.
