Jin Yue Wan: A Modern Reflection of Traditional Chinese Architecture

Reviving Jiangnan Garden Wisdom in Contemporary Design

The project's location in the waterland culture-rich Jiangnan Region significantly influenced its design. The design team, led by Zhang Shuo, Cui Xiaobing, Xie Meijuan, Gao Weijun, Jiang Chenlei, Weng Wei, Shen Shi, and Liu Li, applied traditional garden creation approaches to architecture, maximizing the use of the site. The result is an elegant oriental atmosphere that embodies the Chinese academy culture.

What sets Jin Yue Wan apart is its immersive demonstration area with six garden landscapes. The overall landscape planning inherits the three-millennia-old Jiangnan garden creation wisdom, absorbing the quintessence of the local Jichang Garden and street & lane culture. Traditional techniques for stacking stones, designing water systems, arranging plants, installing lattice windows, and paving were adopted, creating a contemporary destination with unique garden landscapes.

The project's realization technology is a blend of new techniques and optimization of scales, making the buildings appear simple and light. Facade details, such as clear, soft stones, champagne-colored materials, and Chinese-style elements, reflect an inheritance of traditional Chinese-style design. Furthermore, the landscape pavilion in the garden adopts Chinese classical mortise and tenon joint structures, which were made by old craftsmen, without using a single nail in the construction process.

The design team faced significant challenges in ensuring the building design featured a Chinese style without being conservative and keeping pace with the times. They also had to balance aesthetics, practicality, and low operating cost. Despite these challenges, the team managed to preserve the charm and quintessence of Chinese-style architectures and innovated through modern approaches, making the Chinese-style buildings more natural, modern, and dynamic.

The project's excellence in design and innovation was recognized with a Silver A' Architecture, Building, and Structure Design Award in 2021. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. Jin Yue Wan, with its strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, certainly fits the bill.
