Hilltop: A Unique School Design

Designing a Charity School on a Challenging Hilltop

A charity school that had been run by a zakah-funded, not-for-profit educational trust for the last six years finally required a building. The site is located on a hilltop, in the unplanned settlement within the walls of the majestic Golconda fort in Hyderabad. This school had been functioning out of a large shed with partitions to create classrooms. The project was riddled with multiple challenges, such as a low budget, difficult terrain, and a tight context.

The Hilltop school, designed by architect Takbir Fatima, stands as a testament to creativity and innovation in the face of adversity. With limited resources and a challenging site, Fatima and her team managed to create a unique and functional space that caters to the needs of the students and the community.

The school's design takes inspiration from its surroundings, incorporating the rocks and undulating terrain into the building itself. Some classrooms feature walls made of rocks, creating a connection between the interior and the natural landscape. The library, with its undulating floor, serves as an informal space for students to explore and learn.

One of the major challenges faced during the project was the tight budget. However, Fatima and her team were able to overcome this obstacle by opting for cost-effective materials such as brick, mortar, lightweight concrete blocks, and steel trusses. The result is a durable and economical structure that meets the needs of the school.

The design also takes into consideration the context of the surrounding neighborhood. The colorful and kitschy walls of the nearby houses inspired the use of vibrant colors in the windows, doors, and grilles of the school. This creates a harmonious blend between the school and its surroundings, while still maintaining a unique identity.

The Hilltop school is not just a functional space for learning, but also a place for interaction and exploration. The design includes light wells and skylights that bring in natural light and ventilation, creating a pleasant and inviting environment for students and teachers alike. The central staircase, painted in bright red, winds its way through the building, connecting different levels and creating a sense of unity.

Completed in December 2017, the Hilltop school stands as a symbol of resilience and creativity. Despite the challenges faced during the design and construction process, Fatima and her team were able to create a space that not only meets the educational needs of the students but also integrates seamlessly with the surrounding landscape and community.

The Hilltop school was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2018, recognizing its innovative design and contribution to the field of architecture. This prestigious award highlights the school's practicality, industry best practices, and positive impact on the community.
