Tetris House: A Masterpiece of Residential Architecture

Marcio Kogan & studiomk27's Award-Winning Design Blends Interior and Exterior Spaces

In the heart of Sao Paulo, a unique residential house stands as a testament to innovative architecture. The Tetris House, designed by Marcio Kogan & studiomk27, is a harmonious blend of interior and exterior spaces, offering a fresh perspective on residential design.

The inspiration behind the Tetris House lies in the continuity of circulation between the inside and outside, dissolving spatial limits. The living room, a permeable space between the entrance and the back of the lot, is the result of this unique organization of the plan. The materials used, primarily wood and stone, extend from the interior to the exterior, further enhancing this seamless transition.

What sets the Tetris House apart is its unique configuration and use of materials. A wooden box on the lot houses the washroom, stairs, and dining room, which opens entirely to the expansive garden at the back. The ceiling of the living room, a slatted wooden lining, creates a cozy, intimate sensation, contrasting with the larger monumentality of the lot. The four bedrooms, including a master suite with a view of the garden, are located on the upper floor.

The technology used in the realization of the Tetris House is as innovative as its design. A wooden volume in line with the eastern façade rests within a ceiling in the front. The space is delimited by a wooden shelf that houses a library and a fireplace. The wooden lining of the ground floor extends to the outside, becoming the façade. The stone on the floor of the living room extends to the terrace, and the same material on the inner walls continues out to the façade.

The design specifications of the Tetris House are meticulously detailed. The shape of the lot, long and straight, dictated a longitudinal implantation of the house. A wooden volume in line with the eastern façade, with a height of a little more than 2.85m and 19m long, rests within a ceiling height of 5.15m and 11.75 in the front.

Despite the challenges posed by the shape of the lot, the design team, led by Marcio Kogan, Carolina Castroviejo, Diana Radomysler, and Maria Cristina Motta, successfully adapted the program to the available space. The result is a residential house that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and comfortable.

The Tetris House's unique design and innovative use of space and materials have earned it the prestigious Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2015. This award is granted to outstanding creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
