House Elvesgarden: A Tranquil Retreat by Stephan Maria Lang

Winner of the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2021

Stephan Maria Lang's House Elvesgarden, a private residence in Munich, is a testament to the power of architecture as a spiritual retreat. Drawing inspiration from Japanese culture and the profound beauty of nature, this design offers a unique exploration of light, shadow, and tranquility.

House Elvesgarden is more than a mere architectural marvel; it is a sanctuary for the soul. The design was conceived for a young widow, providing her with a serene space to retreat and rejuvenate. The atmosphere is deeply influenced by the Japanese tradition of semi-dark, shadowed rooms, where colours appear subdued and the glow seems to emanate from within. This design approach creates an environment where darkness is imbued with warmth and profound colourfulness.

The house's unique features are evident from the moment one steps into the gravelled entrance courtyard. Leaving the outside world behind, visitors are greeted by a house tree that provides protection and casts beautiful shade patterns on the two subtly positioned stonewalls. These walls mark the entrance to the house and the elvesgate entrance to the main garden. The ground floor is an open yet intimate space, with a central bronze fireplace serving as the heart of the living area, surrounded by diverse garden views.

Constructed from concrete, steel, wood, stone, and glass, House Elvesgarden is a testament to the harmonious blend of natural materials and modern design principles. The upper floor houses the private rooms, each meticulously designed to offer various perspectives of the surrounding nature. Covering an area of 1600 m2, the house is a powerful yet quiet presence, offering tranquility and a deep connection with nature.

The design process, which began in 2017 and concluded in 2019, was deeply rooted in research and a profound understanding of the owner's needs and aspirations. The owner's dream of having a garden reminiscent of her childhood played a significant role in shaping the project. The resulting design is a sensitive space that offers tranquility and countless approaches to its counterpart: the shadow.

House Elvesgarden's design excellence has been recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2021. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The designs that receive this award are admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcasing a remarkable level of excellence and introducing positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.

In conclusion, Stephan Maria Lang's House Elvesgarden is a remarkable architectural achievement that beautifully illustrates the power of design in creating spaces that nurture the soul. Its unique blend of natural materials, light, and shadow, coupled with its profound connection with nature, makes it a deserving recipient of the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award.
