Xi'an Qujiang Art Center: A Masterpiece of Design and Innovation

Architect Xiaoxia Wang's Award-Winning Design Fuses Architecture and Nature

Located in Xi'an, China, the Qujiang Art Center, designed by Xiaoxia Wang, is a testament to the seamless integration of architecture and nature. This award-winning design, a floating horizon marked by a suspension structure, has redefined the boundaries of architectural design and innovation.

The inspiration for the Qujiang Art Center stemmed from the contemplation of the relationship between architecture and nature. The designer sought to create a space where the building and the site could interact, resulting in a unique experience for visitors. The double-layer full glass curtain walls allow for a fuzzy boundary, enabling the building to interact with nature.

The Qujiang Art Center is strategically located in Yanta District, Xi'an, with a mature surrounding traffic system. Its proximity to Qujiang Pool and Tang Paradise, along with its abundant green land resources, makes it a prime location for an art center. The design of the center takes full advantage of these features, creating a space that is both accessible and immersed in nature.

The unique properties of the Qujiang Art Center lie in its construction. The use of cellular aluminum sheet's lightness, high intensity, and high flatness ensures the flatness of the large aluminum curtain wall. This, coupled with the reflections of the surroundings, further strengthens the sense of floating, a key feature of the design.

The design process was not without its challenges. The exhibition hall space is divided into three layers, all of which are part of a suspension structure. This change in the stress mode of the column, from bearing pressure to bearing tension, allowed for the full release of the exhibition space's freedom. The result is an almost unobstructed sight line, blurring the boundaries between the inside and outside.

The Qujiang Art Center is not just an architectural marvel; it is also a testament to the power of design and innovation. The building, like a glass exhibit held in the air, forms a unique visual sign beside the urban road. The activities in the exhibition hall become part of the exhibition, attracting people to enter the site and experience the narrative of design. This fusion of architecture and nature, of design and innovation, is what makes the Qujiang Art Center a masterpiece.

The Qujiang Art Center was awarded the Platinum A' Architecture, Building, and Structure Design Award in 2022. This prestigious award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that showcase unmatched professionalism, contribute to societal wellbeing, and make the world a better place. The Qujiang Art Center, with its unique design and innovative approach, is indeed a deserving recipient of this award.
