TechU Ibadan: A Unique Administrative Building for the Technical University

An Innovative Design by MZ Architects

The heart of the Ibadan University project lies within a circular enclosure: the faculties, the administration, the library, the research center, the auditorium, and the amphitheater are free-standing volumes shifting within the grid. The core of the Ibadan Technical University campus is the administration building with an architecture formed of suspended ceilings, shading the common zones, and forming nice gathering areas in between the administration volumes.

Being one of the first cities to introduce higher education in Nigeria, Ibadan has launched the idea of a technical university. The Ibadan Technical University stretches over a million sqm of land, adjacent to the main Lagos-Ibadan road. The master plan’s concept aims to create a dynamic and interactive space for students and staff. A circle - the symbol of unity - defines the master plan’s layout where different functions are united in an enclosed, landscaped, and shaded pedestrian zone.

The administration building, which also includes the university library, offers a design inspired by red brick architecture. Brick volumes pop out inside two suspended concrete slabs, creating shaded gathering areas between the two functions. This unique design feature not only provides aesthetic appeal but also enhances the functionality of the building.

The TechU Ibadan project is not just about architectural innovation; it also focuses on sustainability. The master plan takes into consideration natural and environmental conditions, optimizing the use of solar energy and prevailing winds. This strategic orientation has influenced the distribution of functions and the circulation and transportation system, promoting walkability. The Technical University of Ibadan is a self-sustaining project that contributes to the country’s planning development and sets the stage for the future of sustainable architecture in Nigeria.

The TechU Ibadan project is located in Oyo State, Nigeria, and was designed in the summer of 2013. It embodies the principles of unique innovation, research collaboration, exceptional service, integrity, excellence, and the uplifting of the human condition. With its commitment to the efficient and responsible use of science, technology, engineering, and innovation, the Technical University of Ibadan aims to solve societal problems and foster a culture of entrepreneurship.

The TechU Ibadan project, designed by MZ Architects, has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2014, which honors well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. This prestigious accolade acknowledges the integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, contributing to a better world.
