Kampot: A Blend of Heritage and Modernity in Packaging Design

Blending Tradition and Innovation to Showcase a Rare Product

Kampot, a family-run business rooted in the heritage of their village, has created a packaging design that reflects their unique story and the essence of their brand. With a focus on promoting local products and empowering women, Kampot's packaging stands out with its blend of vintage typography, modern colors, and sustainable materials.

The inspiration for this project comes from the rich history and purpose behind the Kampot brand. The village of Kampot in Cambodia holds a special place in the hearts of its people, and the design elements draw from the cultural significance of the village. The packaging aims to capture the essence of Kampot and its commitment to preserving traditional processes while competing in a modern market.

What sets this packaging design apart is its ability to tell a story. It showcases the narrative of a rare product and the journey it takes from the hands of local artisans to the hands of consumers. The use of vintage typography evokes a sense of heritage, while the modern colors and aesthetics ensure the design remains relevant in today's ever-changing world.

When it comes to the realization of this design, Kampot prioritizes sustainability. The packaging is made from locally sourced paper pulp, which is printed using offset printing techniques. The paper is completely recyclable and produced using sustainable means and traditional techniques. By avoiding the use of plastic and laminates, Kampot demonstrates its commitment to eco-friendly practices.

The specifications of the packaging include a square box with dimensions of 130mm x 130mm x 130mm. The design eliminates the need for unnecessary packing materials, allowing the soap and loofah to be directly placed inside the box. This minimalist approach ensures a seamless and eco-friendly experience for consumers.

Interacting with the Kampot packaging is a soothing experience. The brand's soaps are designed to improve skin health and provide relief to consumers. The packaging complements this intention by creating a welcoming and relieving sensation for the eyes. The combination of pastel colors and ancestral typography strikes a balance between modern applications and traditional knowledge.

The development of this packaging design took place over a period of six months in India. Extensive research was conducted to understand the preferences and desires of the target audience. Surveys were conducted to gather insights into skincare products and enhance the consumer experience. The results of these surveys influenced the choice of color palettes and the inclusion of complimentary pumice stones/loofahs in every box.

The design process presented its challenges, particularly in capturing the essence of Kampot's multi-phased business growth. Each phase was crucial and needed to be represented in the packaging design. Additionally, achieving a retro touch without relying on retro colors and textures posed a creative challenge. The solution was to incorporate multiple design elements that worked harmoniously together.

Kampot's packaging design reflects the brand's commitment to preserving heritage and culture while remaining relevant in today's market. It captures the attention of consumers with its unique blend of tradition and innovation. The design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in Packaging Design, showcasing its outstanding creativity and contribution to quality of life improvements.
