Masu: A Blend of Modern and Heritage Japanese Design

An Intimate and Meticulously Crafted Bar Experience

Inspired by the Delicate Japanese Drinking Culture

Located in Dongguan, China, Masu is a newly opened bar that offers a unique blend of modern and heritage Japanese design. Designed by Wang Si Han, Masu aims to create an intimate and sophisticated atmosphere that reflects the true essence of Japanese drinking culture.

The inspiration for Masu comes from extensive research studies of Japanese drinking culture, where the integration of a delicate life is embodied in a well-served glass of Japanese-style wine. The overall design details provide a smooth Japanese streamline flow experience, with the use of materials that reflect and elevate the true Japanese spirits ambient.

The bar's name, Masu, refers to a container specially used for Japanese sake in the old days. This name reflects the intention to bring the rich heritage and experience of Japanese drinking to the patrons of the bar.

What sets Masu apart from other bars is its meticulous attention to detail and the seamless integration of modern and heritage Japanese design elements. The bar frontage is designed to resemble an actual Japanese streets bar, creating an immersive experience for visitors.

The interior of Masu is designed to reflect and create a true Japanese atmosphere. The bar features a frontage walkway, a main lounge, two VIP rooms, a private room, a kitchen, two bar counters, and restrooms. The layout ensures convenient and easy access for the working staff, allowing them to provide top-notch service to the guests.

The design of Masu is realized through the use of innovative techniques and materials. The one-piece South African walnut wood is customized without any splicing, showcasing the craftsmanship and attention to detail. The walls are adorned with customized pigeon holes to showcase a wide variety of liquors, adding to the overall ambiance of the bar. The floor is made of natural black slate stone, creating a heritage feel.

The abundant use of natural wood on the surfaces gives Masu a distinctive warmth and airy look. The careful selection of materials and the craftsmanship involved in the design process truly embody the spirit of Japanese master craftsmen.

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the design team successfully overcame obstacles to bring Masu to life. The incorporation of a long-surfaced bar counter without any nailing or splicing was a creative and technical challenge that was overcome. The design also had to include two VIP rooms, an open bar area, two large bar counters, a kitchen, and a restroom. Additionally, the team had to conceal and camouflage fire extinguisher and sprinkler pipes and water hoses, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

Masu is not just a bar; it is an experience that transports visitors to the heart of Japanese drinking culture. The carefully crafted design, the warm hospitality, and the attention to detail create an ambiance that is both modern and steeped in Japanese heritage. Whether you are looking for a quiet evening with friends or a lively night out, Masu is the perfect destination for a truly unique and unforgettable experience.

With its blend of modern and heritage Japanese design, Masu has been recognized for its outstanding creativity and ingenuity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
