Shanghai PTArchitects' Hefu: A Display Center Inspired by Jade

Exploring the Intersection of Ancient Culture and Modern Design

Shanghai PTArchitects' Hefu Display Center, a unique blend of traditional jade culture and modern design, offers a fresh perspective on architecture. The project, located in the ancient town of Conghua, Guangzhou, draws inspiration from the local jade-making process and the town's rich history.

The design of the Hefu Display Center is centered around the concept of a 'gamble stone' - a term used in the Chinese jewelry industry to describe a rough jade stone whose quality is hidden beneath a layer of weathered skin. The entrance of the center, made from simple stone material with a jade-like texture, invites visitors to explore what lies within, much like cutting into a gamble stone.

Shanghai PTArchitects has successfully combined the inclusiveness of a river, the purity of stone, and the transparency of jade to create a modern, minimalistic design. The design language focuses on basic elements such as light, space, transparency, materiality, and layout. This approach breaks the boundaries between internal and external spaces, with the building's form and facade built around the element of light and natural resources.

The project, which started in July 2018 and was completed in January 2019, is a testament to the design team's ability to incorporate local culture into a modern facade. The design process involved the use of jade-like textures throughout the building, from the entrance gate to the reception lobby and meeting areas. The materials used were carefully selected to reflect the jade-making theme.

One of the challenges faced by the design team was the limited urban land resources. The solution was to create a comfortable space experience while improving the quality of life for residents. The design team achieved this by creating a lively scene where people, nature, and the city live in harmony. The design process was inspired by the four stages of jade making: "jade nurturing", "jade grinding by nature", "jade polishing", and "jade created". These themes were incorporated into four main spaces: the interface display area, front area landscape area, display center, and backyard model area.

The Hefu Display Center was awarded the Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2021. This prestigious award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. The award is a testament to the design team's ability to create a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, while also preserving and promoting local culture.
