Hourglass: A Multifunctional Shelf by Yu Ren

Art of Time Transformed into Functional Design

The Hourglass design is a testament to Yu Ren's innovative approach to design, combining multiple basic functions to create a product that is more than the sum of its parts. The design not only meets basic needs but also offers a unique user experience, making it a product of happiness. It's suitable for various scenarios, and its lamp source is a low-temperature light source, providing light without heat.

The design was inspired by the charm of time, symbolized by an hourglass. As the day progresses, the Hourglass changes roles: a coat rack in the morning, a shelf at noon, and a lamp when night falls. This transformation is a gentle reminder for users to follow the direction of time, perceive the years, and appreciate the finer aspects of life.

The Hourglass is constructed from three colored stainless steel pieces and two different-sized environmental protection plates serving as the laminate. These are connected with angle iron screws, with the top screw doubling as a coat hook. The lamp can be detached and used in different scenarios, adding to the design's versatility.

Yu Ren's design process involved extensive research, including a survey of over two hundred people to understand their living habits. The goal was to identify daily life needs and improve people's happiness. The result is a product that simplifies tedious tasks and adds an element of fun and interaction to everyday life.

The Hourglass project began in Shenzhen in July 2020 and was completed in January 2021. Despite the challenges of combining two basic functions to create a product that not only meets basic needs but also provides users with enjoyment, Yu Ren successfully realized the concept of "one plus one is greater than two". This multifunctional furniture piece stands as a testament to Yu Ren's innovative approach to design, earning it the Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2021.
