Constellation: A Stellar Innovation in Lighter Packaging

Designers Sunhwa Lee and Wenyuan Chen Illuminate the Zodiac with Zippo

Constellation, a unique lighter packaging concept, merges design innovation with the mystique of the zodiac. Created by designers Sunhwa Lee and Wenyuan Chen, this limited edition collection is a testament to the power of design in transforming everyday objects into works of art.

Each Constellation lighter is designed based on different zodiac signs, appealing to Zippo enthusiasts with a comprehensive collection. The packaging, inspired by a spaceship and the beauty of a starlit night, was exclusively developed as a limited edition with only a hundred units produced.

The packaging's unique properties lie in its interactive nature. It lights up, one by one, connecting together to create different zodiac signs. This enhances the aesthetic aspect of the packaging and highlights the concept in a unique way. The lighters can be directly placed on top of the inner packaging, thanks to magnets attached underneath. Moreover, the packaging doubles as a display tool - the user can make it stand by pulling out a triangular bar hidden on the back side.

Sustainability was a key consideration in the realization of this design. Predominantly paper was used to create the packaging. The light effect, which shines through the small dots on the surface of the packaging, is rechargeable with an enveloped USB cable and lasts for twelve hours once fully charged. The effect can be easily turned on and off by pressing a switch installed in the packaging, designed with cost and energy efficiency in mind.

The project, which started in April 2020 and launched in February 2021 in China, was based on extensive market research and target audience analysis. The team faced challenges in achieving the light effect, collaborating with several engineers for more than two months to develop and establish a new light program. After several trials, they were able to successfully install the effect in the packaging.

The packaging represents Zippo’s core value, “We inspire.” As the lighters are under a high-end product line for Zippo, the packaging was developed to appeal to Zippo enthusiasts and loyal consumers who regularly collect the brand's products. The structure of the packaging is designed specifically so it can stand upright and the lighters can be attached and displayed on the surface.

Constellation was awarded Golden in A' Packaging Design Award in 2021, a testament to the design's innovation and impact. The trademark under Reg. No. 347274 in Class 34 has been approved for renewal, extending its valid period of registration to April 29, 2029. This design is a shining example of how design can elevate everyday objects, creating a unique user experience and a lasting impression.
