Parachute: A Wall Shelf That Protects Your Belongings

Yusuke Watanabe's Award-Winning Design Inspired by the Concept of a Parachute

Yusuke Watanabe's innovative wall shelf, Parachute, is a unique blend of form and function. Inspired by the protective nature of a parachute, this design safeguards your belongings from falling. The design, which won the Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2021, is a testament to Watanabe's creative genius and his ability to transform everyday objects into works of art.

Watanabe's inspiration for the Parachute wall shelf came from an unexpected source - Coldplay's first album. The word 'parachute' intrigued him, leading to the discovery of its origin - a combination of the Italian 'parare' (to protect) and the French 'chute' (to fall). This sparked the idea of creating a device that protects against falling - a concept beautifully embodied in the Parachute wall shelf.

What sets the Parachute apart from other wall shelves is its unique mechanism. When in use, the plank for the section being used falls and hangs there, safeguarding items like coats and magazines from falling. This distinctive feature, coupled with its minimalistic design, makes the Parachute a standout piece of furniture.

The Parachute is crafted from sheet metal, with colored stripes separated by thin spaces, creating a visual reminiscent of a modern parachute. The design is a successful transformation of the parachute theme into an aesthetically pleasing shelf design. With dimensions of W:790mm D:30mm H:220mm, the Parachute is a compact yet functional addition to any space.

The design process was not without its challenges. Watanabe faced difficulties in achieving the perfect color gradation that would give the shelf its wall-art-like appearance. However, through trial and error, he was able to overcome this hurdle, resulting in a design that is as much a work of art as it is a functional piece of furniture.

Initiated in April 2017 in Tokyo, the project was completed in October 2018 and exhibited at the Salone del Mobile in April 2018. The Parachute's recognition as the Golden A' Furniture Design Award winner in 2021 is a testament to Watanabe's innovative design approach and his ability to create designs that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

In conclusion, Yusuke Watanabe's Parachute is a prime example of how innovative design can transform everyday objects into functional works of art. Its unique mechanism, minimalistic design, and the story behind its creation make it a worthy recipient of the prestigious Golden A' Furniture Design Award.
