Chu Kochen College: A Model Dormitory Project

Transforming a Dormitory into a Multifunctional Space

The Chu Kochen College at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China, is a model dormitory project that showcases the transformation of an existing building into a multifunctional space. Designed by Bennet Marburger and Ji Zhang, the project aimed to create additional spaces for living and learning within the original dormitory structure, while also serving as a prototype for future dormitory projects.

The design of Chu Kochen College is characterized by its functional and minimalistic approach. The architects focused on creating simple yet refined forms using a restricted palette of carefully selected materials. Each space within the college has a distinct design, but they are all tied together by their materials, simplicity, and functionality.

One of the main challenges faced by the designers was the need to repurpose existing bedrooms into various functional spaces. To achieve this, several rooms were combined to create larger spaces, and columns were incorporated into the design every 3.50 meters. Dark corridors were brightened up by replacing closed partition walls with glass walls, while folding walls and open spaces added flexibility and a more generous atmosphere.

The interior design of Chu Kochen College features natural stone, wood, white metal board, and plaster as the main materials in the public spaces. These materials are complemented by white tiles, anthracite fixtures, and stainless steel, depending on the functional needs of each room. Linear lights, spots, and indirect lighting create a bright and modern atmosphere, while track lighting rails allow for adjustable illumination in special areas. Custom-made furniture in wood, anthracite, and white adds to the functional and elegant appearance of the rooms.

The design scope of Chu Kochen College covers a total area of 2,800 square meters and includes various spaces such as lobbies, classrooms, self-study rooms, offices, exhibition spaces, recreational rooms, public kitchens, and guest suites. The architects used Building Information Modeling (BIM) throughout the design process to combine interior design, furniture planning, and lighting design into a holistic overall planning.

Completed in November 2020, the Chu Kochen College project serves as a model for future dormitory projects, providing a flexible and long-lasting design that maximizes space efficiency and usability. The architects successfully fulfilled the university's standards for safety, quality, and budget, resulting in a well-considered spatial distribution of functions and the use of resilient materials.

The design of Chu Kochen College has been recognized for its excellence and creativity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. This award acknowledges the project's outstanding design, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology to improve the quality of life and make the world a better place.
