Last Romance: A Historical Building Restaurant

Preserving History Through Design

This historical building, once the residence of Xu Baiyuan, former president of the central bank, has been transformed into the CEO 1950 President Art Space. Located in Taipei City, Taiwan, this unique restaurant combines history, art, and culture to create a truly immersive dining experience.

The CEO 1950 President Art Space is a remarkable example of the preservation and revitalization of historical buildings. Built in 1949, this Japanese-style wooden building holds significant historical value, as it witnessed the rectification of Taiwan's economy and the establishment of the monetary system in the 1950s. While many other houses on the same street have decayed over time, the Culture Movement of Taipei City's Old Houses has successfully restored and brought back the former president's residence.

The design concept of the CEO 1950 President Art Space is to connect the traces of the past. Unlike other commercial space reforming projects, the aim here is to provide a new angle for visitors to experience history. From the moment they enter the space to enjoying a meal and sinking into a musical performance, guests are immersed in the river of time, engaging all their senses.

The restoration process of the historical building focused on preserving the original structure and outward appearance while infusing new life into the space. Various techniques, such as reprinting, handmade craftsmanship, and special painting techniques, were employed to enhance the textured and warm ambiance of the old house. Textured hexagon tiles, retro tile mosaics, carved plastic tiles, and unique painting techniques were used to create a visually stunning environment. Copper strips and cast iron elements pay homage to the cultural heritage of the building.

The interior design features mist gold grids, retro glass elements, warm white lighting, glossy marble tables, comfortable seating, and elegant curtains. These carefully selected elements complement the historical charm of the space, creating a harmonious blend of old and new.

The CEO 1950 President Art Space spans a total of 370 square meters across two floors. It serves as a testament to the value of historical buildings and the importance of preserving their artistic and cultural significance. Through collaboration between the Taipei Government and private sectors, this project not only illuminates the history itself but also adds texture to the city.

The CEO 1950 President Art Space is a prime example of how historical buildings can be repurposed and transformed into vibrant cultural spaces. By providing a unique and immersive experience, it allows visitors to appreciate the past while enjoying the present.

With its successful restoration and innovative design, the CEO 1950 President Art Space has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. This prestigious award honors designs that showcase creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
