Revitalizing a Modern Hospital in China

In order to build a large-scale modern hospital in China, THAD reconstructs and expands an outpatient and emergency medical technology complex building, addressing functional optimization and design goals.

This project, led by THAD, focuses on the reconstruction and expansion of the outpatient and emergency medical technology complex building of the People's Hospital in Pudong New District, Shanghai, China. The aim is to create a modern hospital that addresses the existing traffic system and functional process problems, strengthens key departments, and improves the overall hospital environment and quality.

What sets this project apart is its combination of modernity and complexity. The design team incorporated post-occupancy evaluation and Chinese traditional Yin-Yang theory to guide the generation of the building. The result is a unique blend of new construction and reconstruction.

The facade of the building showcases the use of two types of aluminum plates. White aluminum is predominantly used, while wood grain aluminum plates are strategically placed in the corners of the facades. The new building features floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing ample natural light to flood the interior spaces.

The project boasts a scale of 135,357 square meters, with an area of 45,108.7 square meters. It is a testament to the dedication and collaboration of the design team, which includes Yao Hong, Fu Liewu, Li Fei, Wang Xiaohan, Cai Zhengqiang, Jin Cheng, Meng Xianghao, Zhang Lan, and Hu Bo.

Operated by the government, the hospital aims to address the outdated facilities and insufficient functional space of the outpatient and medical technology buildings. By demolishing the existing structures and implementing the reconstruction and expansion, the architects have created a space that meets the service demand and enhances the medical process.

The project, which began in May 2018, is set to be completed in 2025 in Shanghai, China. Extensive research and post-occupancy evaluations were conducted to ensure the success of the reconstruction and expansion. The architects adopted a systematic approach, considering the flow of humans, logistics, and information within the hospital building.

The reconstruction and expansion project faced several challenges, particularly during the transition and restoration stages. Temporary turnover was necessary to demolish existing buildings, and office buildings and wards were transformed into outpatient units to ensure normal business operations. Temporary buildings were constructed, and existing buildings were integrated and transformed to meet the needs of the transition period.

THAD's reconstruction and expansion project of the outpatient and emergency medical technology complex building in Pudong Shanghai is a testament to their commitment to creating modern and functional healthcare spaces. The project has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in 2021, highlighting its outstanding design and contribution to improving the quality of life.
