Falcon: The False Ceiling Inspection Robot

Revolutionizing Rodent Control in Urban Spaces

Most spaces in urban countries face the issue of high rodent activity, especially in false ceilings which are poorly lit, damp, and limiting in access for manual inspection. Falcon is a novel robot aimed at providing sound inspection, monitoring, and management of false ceilings, preventing the infestation of rodents.

In manual inspection of false ceilings, the environment is often dimly lit, poorly managed, and quite inaccessible. However, Falcon, designed by Manojkumar Devarassu, overcomes these challenges with its adaptability, minimal size, and robust properties. Equipped with sensors and imaging devices, this compact robot provides real-time support in false ceilings, aiding in control measures to improve the environment.

The unique properties of Falcon lie in its ability to navigate and inspect the complex false ceiling environment. With its miniaturized design, the robot can adapt to various surroundings and prevent toppling over complex structures. Illumination from within and cameras fixed along different perspectives of the robotic body ensure comprehensive inspection. The continuous feedback from sensors, coupled with AI algorithms, allows Falcon to maneuver effectively in unpredictable terrain.

Measuring at 200mm (L) x 160mm (W) x 75mm (H) and weighing 800 grams, Falcon is a lightweight yet powerful tool. Its charge lifetime is 3 hours, providing ample time for thorough inspections. The in-built cameras at the front, left, right, and top ensure a hundred percent inspection, while sensors aid in height detection.

Falcon operates as a mobile robot dedicated solely to rodent control in false ceilings. With autonomous localization, navigation, and imaging capabilities, it can effectively trap moving rodents even in low-lit environments. The adaptable design allows the robot to mechanically return to its original position, even if it topples over in the complex false ceiling environment. The robot is manually controlled through Wi-Fi via a dedicated app, providing real-time data and navigation capabilities.

The Falcon project, supported by the National Robotics Program and National Environment Agency, began in May 2020. The underlying research for this design emphasizes the need for innovative solutions to inspect and manage false ceiling environments. By preventing rodent infestations and providing real-time feedback, Falcon contributes to improving the overall surroundings.

The design of Falcon posed several challenges, including adaptability in size, shape, and maneuverability within false ceiling environments. Overcoming these challenges required a balance between smooth navigation and reliable feedback data from the sensory devices on board.

Falcon, with its adaptable and robust design, revolutionizes the inspection and monitoring of false ceilings. By providing real-time support and control measures, this innovative robot ensures a safer and more hygienic environment. With its recognition as the winner of the Iron A' Design Award in 2021, Falcon proves its practicality, innovation, and adherence to professional and industrial requirements.
