Gallege: A Stunning Open House in the Heart of the City

An Impressive Residential Design by Michihiro Matsuo

Innovative and Unique Design that Redefines Urban Living

Gallege, a residential house designed by Michihiro Matsuo, challenges the conventional notion of closed urban homes. Inspired by the need for large open spaces that connect with society, Matsuo created a masterpiece that seamlessly blends privacy and openness.

What sets Gallege apart is its impressive façade, featuring a series of horizontally arranged windows that create a beautifully balanced design. The use of a wooden structure adds warmth and elegance to the overall aesthetic. This open and inviting building stands out in the cityscape, with three hobby cars parked on a small plot of land, further enhancing its uniqueness.

Creating such a complex and daring space configuration required meticulous planning and structural analysis. Matsuo ensured the safety of the open design by using large-section laminated wood and metal joints. In earthquake-prone Japan, where wooden structures are frequently used, Gallege stands as a testament to the importance of structural calculations and the use of sturdy materials.

The three-story Gallege boasts a garage on the first floor, while the living space occupies the upper levels. Careful consideration was given to ensure that the line of sight does not intersect with passers-by, maintaining the privacy of the residents while still providing a sense of openness.

Located in Hyogo, Japan, Gallege was completed in November 2020. The design project faced several challenges, including creating an open and rich living environment while protecting residents' privacy. Additionally, ensuring earthquake resistance was a top priority in a country prone to seismic activity.

Matsuo's research on openness and privacy in urban housing played a crucial role in the development of Gallege. Field tours and questionnaires conducted with third parties helped shape the design, ensuring it met the needs and desires of future residents.

Gallege has garnered recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2021. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, technical skill, and a commitment to improving quality of life.

With Gallege, Michihiro Matsuo has created a remarkable residential design that challenges traditional concepts of urban living. Its open and inviting spaces, combined with its elegant wooden structure, make it a true gallery of architectural excellence.
