Journey to Cloud Culture and Art: A New Take on Canteen Design

Revolutionizing Staff Canteen Spaces with Grid Design Thinking

The inspiration for this design came from the exploration of space elements within a canteen. The designers have evolved the concept of a staff canteen from the ancient corridor meal and the western cold food before meal. With grid design thinking, the design is implanted from the line of sight and streamline. The project's unique properties lie in its location, a central business district in Jinan, and its function as a staff canteen that meets various functional requirements.

The design realization technology combines the blue of science and technology with the green of nature to create the main tone of the space. Large area color patches of different shades, plastic materials without time mark, powerful cinematic expression, and geometric composition exist in a contactable way. The interaction of large-area artificial stone, metal line, and green in space design sets up an interesting environmental dialogue in the lobby.

The design specifications include the use of solid wood, metal mesh, mirror steel, and other materials for streamlined functional block. Customized seat combinations, in line with the ergonomic shape and leather upholstery material, maximize the comfort of the experience. The contrast between light and dark and between virtual and real enriches the artistic atmosphere of space and highlights the artistic phenomenon of ecology and future mission.

The project started in December 2019 and finished in October 2020 in Jinan Lixia Holding Group, Shandong Province, China. The design team faced challenges in exploring the space elements of the staff canteen and implanting the design from the line of sight and streamline. They aimed to break the sense of hierarchy and sequence of the traditional staff canteen, form a relaxed and active atmosphere with efficient communication, and highlight the artistic phenomenon of ecology and future mission in a serious space.

This design was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021. The award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
